The Owu Kingdom in Egbaland, Ogun State, has commenced its annual ‘Odun Omo Owu 2023 anniversary’ with a unique interfaith religious service.
Leaders from the Christian, Islamic, and Traditional faiths gathered at the Olowu Palace in Abeokuta, to offer prayers together in unity.
Venerable Solomon Ajakaye of African Church Cathedral, Owu, led the Christians, while the Chief Imam of Owu Kingdom, Sheik Kehinde Sulaimon led the Muslim fold and Chief Adeniyi Fagbemi, the Oluwo Ifa Owu Kingdom led the traditional religion.
The symbolic event served as a prelude to a press conference announcing the 23rd edition of the Odun Omo Olowu festival.
During the conference, Oba Saka Matemilola, the traditional ruler, acknowledged the importance of regular joint conferences for the three religious bodies to promote unity.
He emphasized that despite their different methods, they all worship the same God.
The festival, which will last for six days from October 23 to October 28, aims to celebrate and showcase the rich culture and heritage of the Owu Kingdom.
It also provides an opportunity to strengthen relationships between Owu communities and neighboring areas.
As part of the festival, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) will deliver a lecture addressing the dangers of substance abuse, particularly targeting the youth.
Oba Saka Matemilola highlighted the importance of combating substance abuse, cultism, and hooliganism in secondary schools.
He expressed collaboration with the NDLEA and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to address these issues.
Additionally, the monarch mentioned that he would visit various townships within the kingdom during the festival and confer chieftaincy titles on notable indigenes at the grand finale.
